Frequently asked questions
About XWiki
-
How reliable is the Confluence Migration Toolkit?
The Confluence Migration Toolkit is built on 6+ years of migration experience and over 230 Confluence migrations. The migrator transfers Confluence content, users, permissions, metadata, history, annotations, macros, and more. It also provides a migration report to help you review the results and identify potential issues.
-
Can I test the migrator before committing to migrate to XWiki?
Yes. We recommend performing a test migration first to try out the Confluence Migration Toolkit. This helps identify potential gaps and allows you to validate the migration process before migrating the full instance. The trial allows you to import one space and up to 200 pages per migration. All other functionalities are available as in the licensed version.
-
Is there a list of Confluence macros supported in migration?
XWiki maintains a Confluence macro alternatives page that compares commonly used Confluence macros with their XWiki equivalents and shows whether migration is supported. When a macro is not supported, the page content is still imported and stored in XWiki. The macro itself will not display identically in view mode, where an error message may appear, but its syntax and content remain visible in wiki edit mode. This means the content is not silently lost and can be reviewed, replaced, or supported later.
The list is updated as support evolves. For custom macros, Marketplace apps, or heavily customized Confluence content, we recommend reviewing a sample export during a migration assessment. That gives you a clear view of which macros can be migrated directly, which need adjustment, and whether any additional development would be useful.
-
What happens if a macro doesn't exist yet?
When a macro is not supported, the page content is still imported and stored in XWiki. The macro itself will not display identically in view mode, but its syntax and content remain visible in wiki edit mode. This means the content is not silently lost and can be reviewed, replaced, or supported later through custom development.
-
Do I need the XWiki team to migrate from Confluence?
Not mandatorily. For standard migrations, customers can proceed independently using the Confluence Migration Toolkit. They can also contract consulting hours for specific technical needs. For more complex migrations, XWiki can provide support throughout the migration.
-
What if my Confluence instance is complex?
For complex migrations, XWiki conducts an analysis to define the migration scope and develop a clear and achievable roadmap. A proof-of-concept migration can also be used to test the process on a limited scope before scaling.
-
What security and compliance guarantees does XWiki Cloud have?
XWiki Cloud provides secure, EU-hosted knowledge management with ISO 27001 certification, enterprise-grade access controls, and secure authentication options. Your data stays protected with managed updates, backups, and security patches while keeping the transparency and flexibility of open source. Also, XWiki Cloud instances are hosted through OHV in France.
About OpenProject
-
Does OpenProject have a Jira migration tool?
Yes. OpenProject provides a Jira migrator that can be used to migrate data from Jira Data Center.
-
Can I test the migrator before committing to migrate to OpenProject?
Yes. A proof of concept or test migration can be used to try out the migrator on a limited scope before scaling. This allows you to validate the process and identify potential gaps.
-
Will OpenProject replace all the Jira features and apps we use today?
OpenProject is not a one-to-one copy of Jira. The recommended approach is to map the Jira workflows and Marketplace apps you currently use and assess how they can be handled in OpenProject.
-
What if our Jira instance is highly customized?
Jira configurations can vary depending on the workflows and Marketplace apps in use. Mapping your current setup helps determine what can be migrated and how your specific use cases can be handled in OpenProject.
-
What if some of our Jira functionality does not have a direct equivalent?
If a Jira functionality does not have a direct equivalent, the migration should be assessed based on the specific workflow or use case. OpenProject supports configurable work-package types, fields, workflows, and displayed columns, as well as a REST API and webhooks for integrations and automation. Since OpenProject is open source, functionality can also be customized, for example through a custom plugin.
-
Do I need the OpenProject team to migrate from Jira?
The migration approach depends on the complexity of the Jira setup. The migration can be tested on a limited scope first, and OpenProject can be evaluated against the workflows and applications used by your organization.
-
